The SBA Officer will be an integral partner in helping grow Santander’s U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) portfolio by working with Business Banking Executives and Relationship Managers (RMs) to achieve SBA loan production and compliance, asset quality goals, and the bank’s small business brand expansion throughout the marketplace.

  • Responsibilities for driving SBA volume include joint management of SBA pipeline with assigned Business Banking teams, independent business development to source SBA opportunities and expand the bank’s small business brand, being a SBA subject matter expert and resource to the bank’s sales force, and working with credit teams to ensure compliance with SBA’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

  • The SBA Officer will also interface with the SBA District Offices and small business network to increase the bank’s brand awareness, small business relationships, and business development opportunities for the bank.

  • The SBA Officer’s role for ensuring credit program integrity will include working collaboratively with RMs to identify and structure SBA 7(a) and 504 loans, credit professionals for SBA underwriting, and the bank’s SBA fulfillment team to ensure SBA SOP eligibility.

  • Credit transaction activities include joint calls with RMs, loan structuring to ensure SBA compliance, and effective and timely communication to RMs and customers to ensure exceptional customer service.

  • The SBA Officer will support RMs with SBA documentation, loan closing, servicing and follow-up.

  • The SBA Officer will also work directly with the bank’s Director of SBA to ensure RMs, credit professionals, fulfillment, loan documentation, loan operations, and workout partners, amongst others, are knowledgeable and in compliance with SBA program requirements. These responsibilities will require staying up-to-date on SBA SOP and policy changes, small business market trends, and industry best practices.

  • The SBA Officer will be expected to share this information and knowledge internally with the bank and externally, when appropriate, at events organized and hosted by third parties.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration preferred;

  • Minimum 5 year’s commercial lending experience or significant lending relations experience in guaranty lending in the government or non-profit setting, and required strong knowledge of SBA programs and requirements of SBA SOP.

  • Formal credit training preferable

  • Computer literacy in Word and Excel.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to be used both internally and externally in public and private forums

  • Knowledge of financial analysis, risk evaluation and loan documentation

  • Self-starter with the ability to also work well in a team environment

  • Skilled in application of SBA program requirements and SBA SOP

  • Ability to identify and propose to the bank’s Director of SBA marketing opportunities to expand the bank’s small business brand.
